The group (VAAC) is referring specifically to a parliamentary motion raised by three opposition parties - El Pi, the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos - that "the coalition parties do not intend to support".
Noting that Alcudia town hall has approved the request for a route that does not affect residents, VAAC say that they are "very upset and disappointed with the attitude of President Armengol". "To this day, and after three months, she has not deigned to respond to our request for a meeting."
The El Pi parliamentary spokesperson, Josep Melià, explains that his party has drafted a motion by which parliament is asked to reject the entry of the electricity cable through Pollensa Bay and to urge the Spanish government to instead bring it into Alcudia Bay. This would mean that advantage could be taken of existing infrastructure connecting the port and the substation on the industrial estate by the Es Murterar power station. The "left-wing parties", adds Melià, "have ignored this".

SHOCKING that that Government has not considered the alternative paths for the cable that do not impact the health of the community of Alcudia. Worse, Armengol’s government has not allowed a sufficient period for public consultation and discussion. It is unfortunate and outrageous that the recommendations of the Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment to choose project layout alternatives that respect the 200 m outer limit of population centers have been ignored. Outrageous that of 7 Balearic autonomous organizations consulted during the project preparation only 1 responded with comments. However the Ministry of Health and Consumption of the Government of the Balearic Islands, have not deigned to answer or inform the affected population through public consultation or communication in the media. The issue of where to bring the Cable - which would affect the unique Flora in those waters - is too important not to fight against. May those campaigning against it continue and I hope they have success. It is too important for those in Government to ignore.
I live in Alcudia and I’m not against the cable per se but the planned route is incredibly damaging environmentally once it comes ashore at La Victoria and, even more alarmingly, then snakes its way through areas of natural beauty and residential zones. It is an insane proposal in the light of their being a much safer and much less intrusive route available. It’s almost as if they want to destroy a beautiful location.
This cable would be a total disaster for Alcúdia and its beautiful coast. The Government cannot confirm that it’s safe - families and children would live dangerously close to the cable. The sea bed near the stunning coves would be damaged - forever!!! And the environment and stunning natural beauty of La Victoria and S’llott beach would simply be gone forever!!! The health and environmental consequences of this horrific cable are immeasurable. Once the area is destroyed - it will be gone forever. Cheap electric will quite literally cost the earth!! Alcúdia is a small yet valuable world heritage village. It deserves protection! Why does the Government ignore local residents?? Because they want to sneak this through quietly, they don’t care about the environment full stop!!! Thank you Andrew and MDB for highlighting this story.
