Anyone caught mistreating their pet will face a jail term of up to two years in a new law which was approved this week by the Spanish Members of Parliament. Until now, the maximum penalty in case of death of the animal was 18 months in prison.

Stephen GrimmerWhy would you be sent to jail? The new law is about mistreating animals which you are not doing so I don't know why you think you'd be sent to jail.
So there is a ryral cat that shows up at my place, and sticks around as long as I am there. It is friendly, and I put out food and especially water in summer. When I leave and return it usually turns up, in good condition, within 48 hours. I don't know if it is chipped (it has a clipped ear so I assume it is sterilized), and it keeps other cats (and mice and rats) away, so I'm not complaining. If it was sick/injured I guess I would take it to a vet and pay the bill. But I can hardly take it with me. Am I going to jail?
Good news. Now they should ban bull fighting.
