Digital locks on holiday rentals smashed with a hammer in Mallorca

A video circulating on social media shows a hooded individual smashing two numerical locks on holiday homes, reportedly in Palma. The accompanying message criticises the housing issue, stating: “Housing has become a market commodity despite being a basic right that should be free and universal. While young people cannot gain independence, others are profiting from our hardship.”

This is not the first time Arran has raised concerns about tourism’s impact on the islands. In the summer of 2017, during a protest against tourism excesses, several members entered a restaurant in Palma’s Moll Vell area and threw confetti inside. Eleven youths faced legal proceedings over the incident.

Known for their graffiti protests, Arran has also previously used more direct action. The group has smashed rental cars with hammers as part of their campaign against mass tourism and its effects on local communities.
