It didn't take long for one-time Manchester City striker, the Italian Rolando Bianchi, to make his mark for Mallorca. In the fourth minute, and the new signing put Mallorca one-up against the Bilbao B team. This early advantage was not to be sustained as the Basques began to dominate and create more openings, Santamaría equalising after 28 minutes, following a Campabadal foul. Mallorca sprang into life again just before the break, with shots from both Arana and Brandon and with Bianchi getting booked for use of the elbow in going for a header.

Immediately following the re-start, Coro, introduced in place of Arana, was put clear by Pereira, only to shoot over the bar. Midway through the half, a further effort by Brandon went well over and was responded to by a Cabrero save from Seguín, who netted at the third attempt to put Bilbao two-one up. Bianchi made even more of a mark, his dream start turning into despair when he was carded for the second time, meaning that Mallorca have had a player sent off in two consecutive matches. And in time added on, Bianchi's despair became Mallorca's misery as Villalibre added a third following a counter-attack.
