Real Mallorca 1 - Alcorcón 0

Another new coach for Mallorca, albeit one making a return after some fifteen years, but there was hope that Fernando Vázquez might spark Mallorca into some much-needed life. Opponents Alcorcón from Madrid, were fifth before the start of the match and in rather better than shape than another team owned by Belgian businessman, Roland Duchâtelet, i.e. Charlton Athletic.

Pol Roigé, who impressed as sub on his first appearance during last week's home defeat by Valladolid, was included in place of Moutinho, who has been one of Mallorca's stand-out players in recent games. But sparks of life were in short supply despite Vázquez's return and Roigé's busy style during a first half in which Alcorcón weren't particularly lively either. Roigé provided one of the closer scoring opportunities after thirteen minutes, with Acuña spurning a better chance after 33. Alcorcón, meanwhile, came closest from a free kick moments earlier. Just before the break, Wellenreuther saved from a rebound from Insa's edge-of-the-box effort.

Campaña for Alcorcón, shooting just over, provided the nearest to a goal during the opening exchanges of the second period. Coach Vázquez made his first substitutions near to the quarter-hour mark, bringing on Pereira and Moutinho to replace Coro and Roigé.

Serbian goalkeeper Dmitrovic (ex-Charlton) punched away a Moutinho free kick with twenty minutes left, and it was the same Moutinho who was adjudged to have been fouled in the box five minutes later. Pereira converted the penalty. Alcorcón, searching for a draw, were denied by a Wellenreuther save from David Rodríguez, the league's second-highest scorer. A counter attack through sub Colunga could have given Mallorca a second from Pereira, as the visitors went home empty-handed and new coach Vázquez was left to celebrate a hard-earned three points.
