The seventh Mallorca Football Tournament got under way at the sports centre in Santa Ponsa yesterday morning after an electric opening ceremony on Thursday night.

The mayor of Calvia, Alfonso Rodriguez, attended the opening ceremony and, with the organisers of the Majorcan event, Harry Engels and Hans Emde, welcomed the 150 teams from 37 countries to Santa Ponsa for this year’s first phase of two five-a-side tournaments for government personnel and amateurs.

This first phase of the international sporting event runs until the finals day 7 May and then the second phase of the tournaments will be played at the same location between 10-14 May.

The second phase will feature another amateur tournament and, for the very first time, a Walking football tournament with 300 players, including teams from England, the Netherlands and Scotland.

These teams bring many old famous players like, for example, England legend Chris Waddle. The finals will be played on Sunday afternoon with the prize-giving ceremony at 8pm. There will be prizes in seven categories this year and all the teams, both male and female will, are here to win it.
