STAFF REPORTER Akite - a species of bird of prey in danger of extinction - has been found dead by an Environmental Protection Officer in a water cistern close to Palma. A second bird was successfully rescued, said a ministry report yesterday.

The site had been one where the Environment department had placed two wooden floating boards to help prevent just this type of accident from happening. It was in this very spot that some years ago, several kites had been found dead in the water. Only recently the remains of another bird were picked up here, said the ministry. The surviving kite was rescued last Sunday from on top of one of the floating boards in the cistern and was taken to a wildlife sanctuary where it was seen to by vets. It is expected to be returned to the wild in a few days. The dead bird was taken to a laboratory where it will be submitted to tests which will determine if it had died as a result of poisoning.
