Palma.—Leader of the opposition, the Secretary General of the Balearic Socialist Party, Francina Armengol, yesterday accused the Balearics government of “squeezing” the general public dry with its new set of austerity measures.

She criticised the PP government's drastic cuts to health and social services and said that the “indiscriminate” raising of taxes is merely going to make life even more difficult for the general public. “We have been completely conned by the new government,” she said. “During his electoral campaign, Jose Ramon Bauza promised that he would not raise taxes and since he won the election, he has carried out a monumental U-turn which could prove lethal for the Balearics,” Armengol warned. “We don't deserve a government which had blatantly lied to us, especially one which does not have a road map to get us out of this mess.”
