Palma.—Hollywood blockbuster Cloud Atlas, currently enjoying rave reviews prior to its release later this month, and a box office bonanza forecast, is helping raise the international profile of Majorca.

Shooting of the film was carried out earlier this year when the residents of Soller were not just greeted during the season by the usual holidaymakers. Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess and 400 crew members were in town to film Cloud Atlas, adapted from the bestselling novel by David Mitchell.

North Majorca, with its panoramic Tramuntana mountains, was the substitute landscape for locations which take place in the novel in New Zealand and Hawaii.

This week, to celebrate the release of Cloud Atlas, Hello magazine produced an online feature underlining the joys of the island.

But Majorca is no stranger to famous faces. The Spanish royal family come to the Marivent palace in Palma each year for their summer holidays. In recent years, guests at the Palace have included Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha who were presented with traditional Majorcan gifts. They enjoyed local gastronomy including tumbet, a dish similar to ratatouille which includes garlic, tomatoes and aubergines.

Stars of stage and screen and foreign royalty such as Princess Rania of Jordan have frequently been attraced by top class boutiques in Avenida Jaime III in Palma.
