Well aware of the spread of the palm tree red beetle plague (picudo rojo) both in Palma and in outlying areas of the island, the town council in Marratxi is getting ready to defend itself, siege-style against the insect invasion.

Cati Pocovi, Environment Councillor on the council said yesterday that “It is the responsibility of palm tree owners to keep them in good health and watch out for signs of the plague.” She explained that there was no funding in the municipal treasury to help finance treatment or in the case of dead trees, chopping down and removal. If owners are aware of palm plague, they need to contact the government's Vegetation Health department Pocovi said.
