Palma.—Residents in the central Palma suburb of Sa Gererria claimed yesterday that the noise and nuisance produced every Tuesday during the “Ruta Martiana” late night pub crawl was getting worse, not better.

Ferran Tarongi, the President of the Canamunt Residents' Association which has long been claiming that local people can't get any sleep when revellers are out and about in the streets until the early hours of the morning, accused the new Palma City Council of not keeping to its election promises of finding a compromise between local businesses and residents. “We are still at loggerheads,” claimed Tarongi who said that despite the new Mayor, Mateu Isern's commitment to reorganising the opening hours of bars, cafés and restaurants in Sa Gererria, no-one from the City Counci has yet approached the Residents' Association. “All we ask,” said Tarongi is that we get a good night's sleep. He added that the Mayor needs to get a grip on the situation and apply the anti-street drinking laws in sa Gererria, and not just on the Paseo Maritimo.

A visit by the Ombudsman earlier in the year had decreed that the right of people to a decent night's sleep took precedence over the right of others to enjoy themselves. Local businesses meanwhile say that the late night pub crawl has reinvigorated local trade.
