STAFF REPORTER THREE kites, a barn owl and a kestrel have been found dead on a country property in the Migjorn district of Majorca, in what the Balearic government yesterday described as a possible case of poisoning.

Government sources pointed out that the kite is a species in danger of extinction and that both the barn owl and the kestrel are protected by law.
As is the case in all such findings, the government are launching an inquiry involving a detailed search of the site where the birds were found and an analysis both in the Balearics and on the mainland of the bodies to check for traces of poison. Attending the scene yesterday were the Nature Protection branch of the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA) and Balearic Conservation group GOB. It is a criminal offence to poison wildlife.
