Newsdesk SALES of packets of cigarettes in the Balearics totalled 263'231'473 euros in July, some 12.5 percent more than in July 2006, according to figures published yesterday by the Tobacco Market Commission.

The report says that sales of cigarettes in Spain have increased by 0.5 percent during the first seven months of the year, a period in which 2'552.8 million packets of cigarettes (20s) were sold.

The figures say that as the sales of packets of 20 cigarettes has remained the same since last July, the increase in income shows a large increase of 13.3 percent to 6'379.7 million euros.

The region with the highest number of packets of cigarettes sold up to the end of July was Catalonia with 486 million packets.
This was followed by Andalucia with 465.2 million, Valencia with 327.4 million and Madrid with 308.2 million. The regions where the lowest number of packets of cigarettes were sold were Navarra with 49.8 million, Cantabria with 32.3 million and La Rioja with 14.6 million.

The most popular make is Marlboro, with a 16 per cent share of the market, followed by Fortuna and Chesterfield.
