Mateo Isern, the former mayor of Palma and now a deputy for the Partido Popular in the national Congress, is being treated in Palma's Clinica Juaneda for back injuries following a crash involving the motorbike he was riding and a Kia SUV.

The accident happened around midday yesterday on the old Bunyola main road, witnesses saying that the driver of the Kia ignored a give way sign and collided with the bike that Isern was riding, accompanied by his wife, Maria José Barceló. Both were knocked off the bike and hit the tarmac heavily.

Maria José Barceló's injuries were more serious than Isern's and she required emergency surgery for fractures of the tibia and fibula of her right leg. Both are said to be responding well to treatment.
