Malcolm Arnold composed 'Three Sea Shanties' in 1943.

The British composer was only 22 at the time and principal trumpet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. 'What Should We Do With A Drunken Sailor' was one of the three tunes on which this 1943 work for woodwind quintet was based.

The Balearic Symphony Orchestra periodically stages chamber concerts, the latest of which is for a quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoons. The programme features Arnold's Shanties as well as, among others, Debussy's 'Arabesque No. 1', originally written for piano but since arranged for a woodwind quintet.
