Romeo and Juliet opera coming top Palma's Teatre Principal. | Teatre Principal

In Mallorca, a comparison has been made between Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, which was first published in 1597, and the Canamunt-Canavall vendetta which broke out in Palma the following year.

Both have to do with young loves from feuding families.

So there is a certain dash of local history as background to the Charles Gounod opera, Roméo et Juliette, which was based on Shakespeare's play and premiered in Paris in 1867. In May, the opera will be coming to Palma and will conclude the Teatre Principal's current opera season.

The Balearic Symphony Orchestra, the theatre's main and children's choirs will accompany leading soloists from Mallorca, such as Marta Bauzà (Juliette). Costumes will apparently be by Christian Lacroix (his company, one assumes).
