THE owners of the long abandoned Lluís Sitjar stadium in central Palma (the RCD Mallorca football club and co-owners) are thinking of building a commercial centre on the site, Biel Cerda, the football club's Heritage Director said yesterday.

Cerda explained that the land's proprietors were considering what should be done with the football club's legacy, and one option being mooted was to return the principal stadium of RCD Mallorca to Lluïs Sitjar along with a new commercial centre.

The proprietors of the club want its stadium to have a friendly atmosphere and be easy to get to for the fans. These were qualities very much in mind when Lluís Sitjar first played host to RCD Mallorca.

However, Cerda was careful to add that before any decision is made, a feasibility study would need to be undertaken to make sure that the visual impact is not unfavourable for local residents.

Another possibility, Cerda confirmed was to reform the Iberostar stadium and sell the land at Lluïs Sitjar to Palma City Council. He added that a deadline of three months hence has been set to decide what to do with the Lluïs Sitjar stadium and put the proposal to the City Council. “We are still in a very early stage of the decision-making process,” Cerda claimed.
Joan Aguiló, President of the co-owners of Lluís Sitjar, highlighted the need to “find a solution” for that area of Palma. But he also said that he had great hopes that RCD Mallorca would use the stadium as its home ground again.

He pointed out that the football club only has a third part share in the ownership of the ground. The remaining two thirds belonging to other co-owners.

Earlier this year, the Mayor of Palma, Aina Calvo had expressed interest in purchasing the stadium ground and turning the site into a fairs and exhibition site.
