Palma.—Vicens Thomas, who is now a regional Parliamentary spokesman for the Socialists said yesterday that there are now 193 patients more waiting for hospital treatment than there were six months ago prior to the new Partido Popular government coming to power.

Thomas said at a news conference that “it's a sad day for the health of residents of the Balearic Islands that as a result of the new government having made more than 2 million euros worth of cuts, the waiting lists are lengthening.” Providing data comparing figures for 2010 and 2011, Thomas said: “The Partido Popular (PP) government has achieved within four months which the previous Socialist coalition couldn't manage in four years.” He said that the number of people waiting for hospital treatment has risen from 12'234 to 13'273, the percentage of people waiting for an operation within 90 days now stands at 80 percent and those on the list for over 6 months has gone from 0 to 193. “These figures,” said Thomas, “point to poor management, and show that economic cuts are more important to the Partido Popular than the health of the citizens of the Balearic Islands.” He also accused the PP of flouting the law by not publishing waiting list details every 3 months.
