The new regional government will next year have to allocate 860 million euros to pay bank debts incurred by the previous administration, says the Sindicatura de Comptes (the regional audit office).
It has recommended that the government develops a plan for amortisation to allow for debt repayment in future years.

The 860 million includes over 200 million euros of interest, though the total figure is subject to possible change - especially where interest payments are concerned - through negotiation with national government.

For the whole of the new legislature, the audit office calculates, the debt will amount to some 3,000 million euros.
