Rafael Nadal was knocked out of the Madrid Open on Friday by 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, the rising star of Spanish tennis. In Friday's quarter-final, Alcaraz beat the five-time champion Nadal 6-2 1-6 6-3.

Alcaraz has broken into the top ten of the world rankings and appears destined for the very top. Friday's win was the first time he had beaten Nadal in three meetings.

Nadal was retuning from injury, and this was his second defeat of the year. Alcaraz will meet Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.
