AN absolute disgrace. The Balearic Sewage Treatment Company (IBASAN) has quietly confirmed that as a result of a fault on the pumping machinery raw sewage has poured into the Bay of Pollensa.

Not once, possible at least five or six times over the past few weeks. The Pollensa council are naturally taking the problem seriously, they are threatening to take legal action against IBASAN. I just don't understand how this can happen and I don't think IBASAN realises how serious it is. Heads should roll. For the benefit of IBASAN I would just like to say that Pollensa is a tourist resort which depends on tourism, with most tourists going there for its beach and sea. While there is no health risk to bathers it rather tarnishes the area's image and unfortunately it could affect bookings. It will come as no surprise if Puerto Pollensa beach fails to win the coveted blue flag for its beaches from the European Community. Two years we received literally hundreds of letters from tourists who had been on holiday in Pollensa and said that the area had decline quite dramatically. Many, I suspect will not return. The Pollensa council vowed to clean-up its act but still mistakes are happening such as the sewage leak. This sort of thing just should not happen. It is a disgraceful state of affairs. How is Pollensa to compete with other holiday destinations when the sea-water is not up to scratch?

The Pollensa council should demand an urgent clean-up operation from the local government and they should also be offered compensation. It is such a shame when first class tourist resorts are badly affected because officials aren't doing their jobs right. If Puerto Pollensa does have a poor season this year perhaps the local sewage treatment company should take part of the blame.
