The Chopin Festival in Valldemossa is one of Mallorca’s most important musical events and is certainly the oldest.
The first festival was held in 1930. It was an initiative by the Mallorcan composer Joan Maria Thomàs to recognise the fact that Chopin (and George Sand) had stayed in Valldemossa almost one hundred years previously.
The opening concert for the 2023 festival is this Sunday (August 6). German pianist Oliver Kern will be performing a programme that includes Chopin, e.g. Ballade No. 1 in G minor Op. 23, as well as works by Brahms, Beethoven and another Mallorcan composer, Miquel Capllonch. His numerous recordings include Chopin, Brahms and Beethoven, and he is considered to be a specialist in all three composers’ works.
