The original 'West Side Story' was a stage musical that was tried out in Washington and Philadelphia before hitting Broadway in September 1957.
The film was released four years later, and Steven Spielberg updated it in 2021. A classic, of that there's no doubt, it does perhaps owe its popularity to the enduring premise that came from 'Romeo and Juliet', on which it was based, as well as the Bernstein/Sondheim music and lyrics.
An adaptation has been put together by the Mallorca Chamber Orchestra. Described as a "semi-staged" version, it features some leading Mallorcan singers, e.g. tenor Antoni Lliteres (Tony) and soprano Natalia Salom (Maria), as well as three Inca dance schools - Adae Studios, Espai Dansa and Rhythm Nation.
