Gabriel Téllez, otherwise known as Tirso de Molina, was a Catholic monk who was born (probably) in 1579 in Madrid.
Also a playwright, he is best known for the 1630 play ‘El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra’, The Seducer of Seville and the Stone Guest. It was this play that fully dramatised the legendary figure of Don Juan.
From the Spanish Juan came the Italian Giovanni and hence Mozart’s Don Giovanni opera, which premiered in Prague in 1787. The reception was overwhelmingly positive. A Vienna report read: “Herr Mozart conducted in person and was welcomed joyously and jubilantly by the numerous gathering.”
Regarded as one of the greatest operas of all time, the Mallorca Chamber Orchestra and eight soloists are bringing it to Inca.
