Merkel took this stand only two days before she faces a critical election today in North Rhine Westphalia that may result in the loss of regional coalition partners and even wider setbacks. Merkel has been reluctant to commit Germany so heavily to Greece's rescue but told Parliament, “The future of Europe and of Germany is at stake.”
