I RECENTLY rescued' three kittens with the intention of finding new homes and I had no idea it would be such a task. These little cuties are pets - living inside, handled every day, regular trips to the vet and yet I've not had one call about them. This is mainly because the island is overpopulated with cats and it's the season for kittens. I would like to see a catch and release scheme implemented here like you see in other countries.
Catching, spaying and releasing cats is a humane way of reducing numbers in the long term. I'm sure there must be funding available from the council and various international charities if we could find willing vets and volunteers. I'm afraid I don't know enough about it or have enough contacts to know where to start. All I can do is ask.
I have also contacted a local radio station in the hope that someone will take up the mantle. It's in everyone's interests to do something other than the current humane removal' method which clearly doesn't work and is unpopular with many.
With this scheme everyone wins, everyone will support it and hopefully many more people will get involved.
