THERE will be more taxi drivers than usual working today, the day of the national strike because capitalism is alive and well in some quarters in Majorca. Public transport is expected to be widely disrupted today and cabbies, who should have the day off today, have been allowed to work eventhough it was meant to be their rest day.

So in some cases one man's loss, is another's gain! What taxi drivers fear, though, are pickets who will be out in force today at the airport and in the centre of Palma. A working cabbie would be like a red rag to a bull!! But it does show that some sole traders will not even allow industrial action to interfere with their drive for a livelihood. While I support the right to strike I also support the right to work. Anyone who wishes to go to work today should be allowed to do so without any type of intimidation. At a time when the Spanish economy is still in recession the last thing that is needed is a general strike. Instead of a strike a protest would probably be a better idea. The Spanish government has been forced to take some difficult decisions and the labour laws needed to be changed. In these hard times dialogue is the way forward not industrial action which could bring the country to a standstill.
