By Jason Moore I was rather glad that Rio won the Olympics last week because it is about time that South America hosted a major international sporting event, especially as Brazil is being tipped as one of the super-powers of the future. Unfortunately for Spain, Madrid was pipped at the post. Now, Madrid could launch a new bid for the 2020 Olympics. This was the second time that Madrid was beaten. (it came third after London´s first for the 2012 Olympics and now second after Rio). Better luck next time? who knows. All I do know is that Olympic bids don´t come cheap. I was also quite amazed to see the large number of politicians who travelled to Copenhagen for the actual vote. From Prime Minister Zapatero to leader of the opposition Rajoy, to the Mayor of Madrid. But there was no Rafa Nadal or any other of the top Spanish sporting stars (and there are quite a few). Less politicians more sports stars is the answer! Madrid must now retire and abandon any plans for yet another bid. Spain is in deep recession (some even say depression) and now is not the time to spend large sums of money on ambitious projects. Prime Minister Zapatero is raising taxes and money is in short supply. The time has come to save money rather than waste it!
