IT is all very well the Palma City Council building cycle tracks and leasing out bicycles for free, but little is being done to keep cars out of the centre of the city. The alternative at the moment to the car, according to the City Council, is to forget your car and use a bicycle.

That is simply not going to happen. Until the Council introduces proper legistaion the car is still going to be king in Palma and the gridlock is going to continue. During the morning rush hour there are large tailbacks at all the major exits and entrances to the city. Surely, there must be a way to limit the traffic? The City Council should be looking at what other local authorities have done across Europe. I initially welcomed the introduction of the cycle tracks around Palma, but unfortunately you can count the number of cyclists who are using them on a single hand.

The cycle tracks have only made the problem of gridlock even worse because the size of the road is smaller. Come on City Council, start tackling the problem of traffic in the centre of Palma. We have a fantastic city which unfortunately is being spoiled because there are just too many cars. The City Council should adopt a more anti-car philosophy because otherwise the problem is going to get worse, not better.
