WELL, central government in Madrid obviously does not think so. It has come to light that since the Partido Popular came to power, funding for tourism has been cut by nearly 50 percent and it appears that the Balearic government has done nothing to challenge Madrid about its spending cuts to a sector upon which the Balearics survives - without tourism the region would die a slow and nasty death!
Nevertheless, over the past year we have heard members of the Balearic government sprout forth about how strong the Balearic economy is, how it has been a record year for tourism and job creation and how we will be the first region to emerge from the recession and set an example to the rest of the country.
If that is the case, then why is Madrid ignoring the needs of the Balearic power house and the regional government allowing its political bosses to get away with it?
Jason Moore wrote about towing the party line inSpanish politics in this column a few weeks ago, but surely the Balearic government and its representatives in Madrid are allowed to speak out for what is considered to be right and proper for the people of the Balearics they represent.
I have proposed scrapping the island councils and slimming down the make up of regional government many a time to save money and confusion, now I wonder if we could do without a local government?
