FOR Britain's Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, who warned against changing the system of self-regulation by newspapers to any arrangement by which the government would have ultimate power. While acknowledging that the press could behave “criminally and with scandalous cruelty on occasions” he said that its ability to reveal significant public scandals was a priceless asset. Lord Judge also argued against any regulatory role for the judiciary and commended the work of the Press Complaints Commission.
