DEAR Mr, Walsh, Congratulations on your proposed purchase of BMI (the former British Midland), the British Airways/Iberia airline gets bigger everyday. On behalf of the English-speaking community in Majorca I would ask whether you would be willing to reintroduce British Midland´s direct air link between Heathrow and Palma. When this route was cancelled it was a major blow to Majorca, especially now as there are no daily flights to Britain over the winter period. During the recent ABTA convention you said that the lack of flights was one of the reasons why you decided to sell your home on the island.

Now you have an opportunity to remedy this state of affairs. Over the last few weeks this newspaper has received hundreds of letters from readers regarding the lack of flights and I am sure that there would be demand for a daily service to London over the winter. Also, the Balearic government have been urged by the British tourist industry to look at the possibility of reducing airport landing fees over the winter period. It is quite amazing that one of the principal tourists destinations in the world has so few flights during the winter period. Many British residents would like to go back to Britain for Christmas and probably a similar number of tourists from Britain would like to come here over the festive period. I sincerely hope you can help us to resolve this problem. Kind regards Jason Moore.
