My familiarity with the American Constitution is not such that I know whether a presidential candidate, once nominated by his or her party, can resign in the course of the campaign to allow someone else to take over -- the vice-presidential candidate perhaps. Just now quite a lot of people in the Republican Party must be wishing that such a provision exists to enable Mitt Romney to make a graceful exit before he does any more damage to his party's cause. The recordng of his remarks at a fifty thousand dollar a plate private fund-raising event in Fiorida are absolutely damning of his attitude to the American nation as a whole and of his incompetence in foreign affairs. His dismissive attitude towards “47 per cent” of the American people “who will never take personal responsibility and care for their lives” is perhaps not surprising coming from a billionaire but his remarks about the Middle East are a different matter entirely.

There is no substance in his claim that “Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace with Israel” while his view that “The idea of getting Israel to give something up to get the Palestinians to act is the worst idea in the world” completely overlooks the fact that what Israel needs to give up - West Bank land for building settlements which was misappropriated by Israel in the first place.
