...for the Burmese junta which has announced that the country's first election in twenty years will be held on 7 November. Aung San Suu Kyi led the National League for Democracy to victory in the 1990 election but had it taken from her by the same military that has this time round ensured she will still be under house arrest when votes are cast in November. Although some 40 parties will contest the election most of these are either supporters of the junta or will stand on purely local issues. The result is a foregone conclusion.
