The new Spanish manager, Julen Lopetegui, has named his first squad since taking over. Spain play Belgium on Thursday.

If La Liga is the best league on the planet (blah, blah, blah), why do seven members of the squad play in the Premier League? And that figure could have been even higher - Chelsea’s Fabregas and Pedro have been left out. Had they been included, nine of the Spanish squad would have come from the Premier League.

David de Gea, Adrián, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Silva, Mata, Nolito and Costa all play in England, so what is wrong with the Spaniards who play in the wonderful Liga?

Once upon a time, and not too long ago, yes, Spain had a much better team than England; in fact most other countries, winning World and European Cups. But lately, there is not much difference between the two sides.

England can’t breed winning footballers, people often complain, but at least they play in England, unlike the Spanish.

Let´s face it, what was once a very British disease is now spreading - i.e. money chasing. Football players go to wherever they can get the most money. Local and National pride are forgotten when the carrot of a large wage packet is dangled under their nose.
