THE Mayor of Palma, Joan Fageda, on behalf of the city and its population, sent a telegram to the Spanish Royal Family first thing yesterday morning, expressing the public's condolences for the death of the King of Spain's mother, doña Maria de las Mercedes de Borbon, the Countess of Barcelona, who died on Sunday afternoon. In the telegram the Mayor stated that the City of Palma would like to pay homage to the Countess and sends its condolences to the Royal Family, whose ties with Palma and Majorca run very deep. In Madrid thousands of people queued for hours outside the royal palace to pay their last respects to the King's mother, who died aged 89, while on holiday with the Royal Family.
