Leading European tour operators have urged the Insular Council of Ibiza to introduce more environmental protection schemes, especially in hotel complexes. The Insular Councillor for Tourism and Development, Josep Mari Ribas, yesterday met representatives from tour operators Ultramar Express and Germany's market leader TUI, which recently purchased Britain's Thomson Travel. According to Ribas, the German market is particularly concerned about the environment and has suggested that steps be taken to make hotels and resorts more ecologically friendly. The German tour operator also stressed upon the Insular Council the need for more wide ranging selected waste collections and the preservation of the environment.
