A 22-year-old Briton died late yesterday after his moped was in collision with a car close to Santa Maria. He was the third motorbike rider to die in the Balearics in 24 hours and the second Briton. The accident occurred at 10.30p.m. on Sunday night on the Palma to Puerto Alcudia road (which passes through Santa Maria). For reasons unknown a motorbike ridden by Toby J.M., 22, collided with an oncoming vehicle. The driver and passenger of the car escaped without injury. Earlier on Sunday a 27-year-old Spaniard died instantly after the motorbike he was riding went off the road close to Sa Pobla. He died instantly. In Ibiza, a middle aged Briton died on the Sant Antoni road after he collided with a stationary vehicle. The recent spate of motorbike accidents follows last week's death toll of seven people in car accidents. In just under a week Balearics' roads have claimed 10 lives. Motoring groups are already calling for action. Every year hundreds of people die in accidents on Balearic roads. Motoring groups have said that most island roads are in a poor state of repair and need a major overhaul. They also say that police patrols and stop checks should be increased even further.
