The 19-year-old Scottish tourist arrested last week suspected of having apparently beaten his girlfriend's three-year-old son, was last night being held in Palma prison after having appeared before a Palma magistrate earlier in the day. The incident, involving the three tourists on holiday in Magalluf, apparently happened in the early hours of Thursday morning, but yesterday the teenage suspect remained silent during the remand hearing. But when first questioned by police, the Scotsman told them that the child bruised himself while playing on the beach. The police were tipped off by a member of staff at a Magalluf cafe who spotted the 19-year-old walking along with the battered child and telephoned the police. A medical examination at a Palma clinic confirmed that the child has suffered bruising to his face, left eye and back. On the night of the incident the couple and child had been out in Magalluf with another couple, but at 5am, the 19-year-old returned to their holiday flat with the child, his mother returned some two hours later. According to the police, it was during that period that the child was apparently beaten. Mother and child flew home to Glasgow on Friday night.
