The Australian government wants Andratx based Christopher Skase badly and they are willing to send a cabinet minister to Madrid to pile on the pressure. If anyone thought that the Australian government's resolve to get Skase was starting to crumble then they were mistaken. Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer was given a re-assuring message by his Spanish counterpart Josep Pique. The will of the Spanish government is to try and satisfy the requests of the Australian government - to the extent, of course, that the court allows us to do this, said Pique, following his meeting with Downer in Madrid on Monday night. Skase, who has lived in Majorca since the early 1990s, is wanted in Australia in connection with the collapse of his media and leisure empire. Downer said that Spain realised it was a high profile issue in Australia and also that it was a matter of concern to the Australian government.
