THE 56-year-old father stabbed 35 times by his daughter at their Palma home on Monday afternoon, died as a result of the multiple wounds and loss of blood the autopsy confirmed yesterday. Residents and neighbours on the Poligono Llevant industrial estate where the victim and his family lived, were still in a state of shock yesterday while the family was struggling to come to terms with Monday night's events and police continued with their investigation. Sources close to the investigation revealed yesterday that the victim, Pedro Jose Iglesias Gracia, who had been off work for the past two years for medical reasons, suffered most of the stab wounds to the stomach. The autopsy revealed that there were signs that he tried to defend himself from his 19-year-old daughter.
She was arrested just hours after the 3pm stabbing, and while still officially a suspect, police sources said that she admitted to stabbing her father during a family discussion, moments after being detained. Police sources said yesterday that the father, who suffered from schizophrenia, apparently had a violent nature, brought on by his illness, perhaps the reason why he attacked his daughter, as claimed. Neighbours recall hearing the mother screaming at her daughter to stop.
What sparked the family argument, nothing unusual to neighbours, remains unclear, but detectives have managed to ascertain that the stabbing happened shortly after the suspect and her mother returned home after picking a nephew up from school. Police have established that Jose Iglesias demanded that his wife hand over the keys to the car, she refused and the two started arguing and as the insults and threats started to fly, Jose grabbed a kitchen knife. Their 19-year-old daughter lunged for the knife, snatching it from her father and then, apparently, stabbed him in what police suspect may well have been an act of self defence. However, it appears that the victim was first stabbed in the hall, but the body was found slumped over a bed.
Signs that the 56-year--old tried to defend himself were found on the body during yesterday's autopsy.
Jose Iglesias, born in Galicia, was described by neighbours as a “very reserved” character, the same words used by school colleagues to describe his 19-year-old daughter. Regulars in his regular bar just 30 metres from the victim's apartment, were still yesterday trying to figure out how this tragedy happened. He was also a regular face at the local police station where he had appeared on at least seven occasions over the past few months to lodge a number of complaints, many of which police said held little credibility. Police will be continuing with the investigation today.
