By Humphrey Carter BALEARIC hoteliers meeting in Ibiza are calling for the construction of more golf courses in the region. President of the Hotel Federation of Ibiza and Formentera, Pedro Matutes, is leading the drive saying that further investment in golf courses is vital for the region's tourist industry.

Meeting with ecologists and environmentalists, he said that golf should be promoted along with the expansion of the region's nautical and hiking sectors.

He said there is no need to fear golf and yachting as in today's modern age, every possible step is taken to make sure that the environment is protected and preserved.

He said that both golf and yachting depend on environmental and marine conservation.
Pedro Matutes said that the number of people playing golf has continued to grow over the past few years, fuelling golf tourism.
But he warned that the Balearics needs to construct more courses to meet demand for, quite simply, the new golfers will go elsewhere.
Golf tourism is one of the markets the Balearic government is keen to expand as part of tourism ministry push to attract more high spending tourists.
The previous left-wing Balearic government froze all golf and accompanying golf hotel developments, which has only served to hold the development of the region's golf industry back four years.

However, now it appears that, within the correct environmental parameters, the Balearics' golf industry can look forward to an exciting future.
With regards to the nautical sector, it was made clear at the recent Balearic boat show in Palma last month, that the industry still feels that it not only lacks sufficient administrational support, but has insufficient moorings for the thousands of yachts which wish to visit the Balearics every year.
