Staff Reporter THE Council of Majorca and leaders of the Chopin Festival of Valldemossa, have organised a series of cultural activities relating to the figure of the writer George Sand, to mark the 200th anniversary of her birth.

The commemorative events, which will be funded to the tune of some 13'400 euros, were given an advance presentation yesterday by the director of the Chopin Festival of Valldemossa, Rosa Capllonch, and by Dolça Mulet, head of the Culture department in the Council of Majorca.

The programme will begin on Sunday 11 July with the showing in plaza de la Cartuja in Valldemossa of the film, “A Winter in Majorca”, directed by Jaime Camino. The work is based on the famous book written by George Sand during her stay on the Island.

On 13 August, an exhibition will be opened at la Cartuja in Valldemossa entitled “Artists' acclaim George Sand” where 40 painters, sculptors and photographers will be displaying their own vision of the French writer. They include Burwitz, Catany, Guinovart and Torcigliani.

Musical homage to Sand will be paid on 5 September this year when a musical marathon is staged in the cloisters of the Cartuja monastery in Valldemossa. Five female pianists including Dina Nedelcheva and Elena Sureda will perform works by Chopin, Liszt and Mozart.

There will also be a dinner at Cas Garriguer, with recipes by Sand chosen and adapted by Toni Pinya.
