THE new Balearic “green card” will come into operation on April 15 and will be given its official launch at the FITUR travel fair in Madrid later this month with the full support of Michael Douglas, the Balearic tourism ambassador.

The Balearic Foundation for Sustainable Development set the launch date yesterday. The green card is another attempt to raise funds for the preservation and protection of the environment and heritage sites, but will not be obligatory. Tourists buying the card at a “modest price” will benefit from cheaper access to cultural events, heritage sites and natural parks.

The green card will also be given a grand unveiling in Germany next month and then in the UK in March ahead of its launch after Easter.
