THE death of the 30-year-old son of the Mayor of Marratxi, Joan Miquel Bestard Matas and two other local men in a tragic car crash yesterday has left the town in complete shock. Joan Miguel and 34-year-old Miquel Cabot Llabrés were travelling along the narrow Sa Cabaneta to Marratxinet road at 1.50am yesterday morning when they were involved in a head-on collision with a Ford Focus driven by 23-year-old Juan Serra Llompart. The tragic accident happened just a kilometre from Son Marcal church.
Guardia Civil traffic police sources said yesterday that a passing driver who witnessed the accident raised the alarm and an ambulance and team of paramedics rushed to the scene, but there was nothing that could have been done to have saved either of the three victims. They were all trapped among the mangled wreckage of the two vehicles which hampered efforts of the medical teams.
Teams of fire fighters had to cut the three bodies free.
All of the victims lived in the municipality of Marratxi.
INVESTIGATORS
Joan Miquel Bestard lived in Pont d'Inca while Miquel Cabot and Juan Serra were from the nearby Pla de Na Tesa and Pórtol.
Guardia Civil accident investigators spent all day at the scene of the accident and, according to the police, it appears that Juan Serra Llompart driving the Ford Focus strayed across the road, which is no more than four metres wide, in to the path of the on-coming Citroen C3.
Further information is however expected to be revealed by the traffic police today.
The fatal accident has stunned Marratxi. All three of the young men had many friends and family members living in the area.
The three funerals are to be held this evening and yesterday the flag at Marratxi Town hall was at half-mast.
