Newsdesk THE Balearic ministry of the environment has made an unfavourable report on plans to build a wind park in Formentor. A spokesman said yesterday that the decision had been taken because such a park “could have a marked effect on the objectives of preserving this area.” Formentor had been proposed to form part of the Nature 2000 Network, a European network of wind parks in areas marked for conservation under the Habitats Directive. This directive is one of the most important instruments of the European Union for the conservation of habitats, species and biodiversity.

The spokesman said that in the area designated for the project there were plant habitats of interest to the European Union.
There are also various birds of prey and sea birds which are vulnerable or are in danger of extinction in the Balearics.
