ALCUDIA
BALEARIC government minister for Industry and Energy, Francesca Vives, said yesterday that it was now certain that lightning was not the cause of the power failure that caused an all-day blackout on Minorca and Majorca on 13th November this year, but rather a short circuit in a section of the generating machinery which will now have to “be repaired.” During a Parliamentary session, the minister said that the dismantling work will mean that Es Murterar power station in Alcudia in the north of Majorca will need to “remain inoperative.” However, the minister gave reassurances that the work will be carried out this coming Saturday night over into Sunday so that other generating points in the region will be able to cope with the existing demand.

Vives declared that the repairs had not begun to date because there was first the need to make sure replacement sections were ready to put in place, and at the same time it was important to ensure that back up systems enabled the regional power supply to continue without interruption whilst technical work was carried out.
