STAFF REPORTER CENTRAL Government confirmed yesterday that increases planned for staffing levels in the Guardia Civil in the Balearics should take the number of officers to 592 this year.

The statement came yesterday in response to a Parliamentary question from Balearic Partido Popular Senator Joan Fageda who wanted assurances of extra security forces for the region. The Interior Ministry claimed that the presence of the Guardia Civil in the Islands has increased by a third over the past five years. As part of the expansion of the force in the Balearics, approval is awaited for a further nine officers to be assigned to Majorca's Guardia Civil Traffic department and for another five specialising in ensuring citizen safety.
