STAFF REPORTER THE regional government has approved funding totalling 12.34 million euros for upgrading 21 town suburbs around the Balearics, spokesperson Joana Barcelo said yesterday.

The project, she added, will create 540 jobs and apart from upgrading the physical appearance of run down areas, will kick start the local economy.
The move is a continuation of a government-driven programme, the “Neighbourhood Improvement Scheme” which last year saw an investment of 9.72 million euros in 22 municipalities around the islands.

Barcelo explained that the upgrade is multi-faceted in that attention is paid not just to giving a facelift to suburbs which have become abandoned over the years by sprucing up existing buildings, providing new homes and green areas, but also by injecting fresh quality into people's lives through social projects and promoting new economic opportunities. There will be 14 projects on Majorca, 5 on Minorca and one on both Ibiza and Formentera.
