By David Barter AN unusual sight awaits those visiting San Lorenzo Church in Palma Nova. Beside the altar stands a veritable mountain of foodstuffs which has been built and shaped to resemble a Christmas Tree.

The Parish Priest, Father Pep Toni, decided that this year there should not be a traditional fir Christmas tree adorning the church but that food should be collected for the poor, which prior to distribution should be displayed in the church in the shape of a Christmas Tree, to demonstrate to everyone the true meaning of Christmas.

This initiative is very much in line with Father Pep Toni's strongly declared view that the church must be a joint and pro-active community of the Spanish and English speaking sections of the congregation and that this community should work for the world, a sentiment expressed on a 30 foot high banner hanging in the church. Tinned and packet food has been accordingly donated by the congregation, and also collected in supermarkets and schools. .
